Sue Pyper

Originally from London UK, Sue
has always been drawn to performance and art, whether it be in
school shows, choirs or behind the lens of a camera. Although
she has enjoyed a successful career in photography, design and
communications, music has been the constant rhythm in her life.
After a period of time spent travelling to places such as Africa,
Europe and Scandinavia, Sue started performing at London venues.
There she met bass player Pete Bolan, and along with lead guitarist,
Chris Ezra, they formed the band “Out of Our Trio”,
which combined the members' eclectic tastes, giving audiences
music from folk to rock and roll.
In 2000, Sue moved to Canada and
produced an award winning CD, "Before You Learn to Fly" which
has been played all over the US, Australia and Canada, including
live performances on the CBC. The title track “Before You
Learn to Fly” won best song in the Vancouver
Island Independent music awards (Sue was nominated for five awards
in total) and another of her songs “I Can’t Go Back
Anymore” was selected as one of the 10 best of
2003 by New York radio station host Bob Sherman. Audiences
love her candid personality and the gentle and compelling sincerity
of her music.
Her new CD "Tail Lights In The
Rain" will be released December 2008
Sue has now put down roots in
the Comox Valley, along with her a-lazing dog Oliver.
Where were you born?
Kingston-upon-Thames (London England)
What’s your sign?
Aries and yes, my birthday is on April Fool's day.
Oldest, middle, youngest,
only child?
Youngest child, I have one older brother.
Where is the strangest
place you have ever done a gig? Hmmm, I guess it would
have to be on the roof of the Swans Hotel in Victoria with
my friend Gord Carter. (We also sang in the shower there too –
fully clothed of course but the shower was so huge we got four
of us in there!)
What’s the best
part of being involved with Voices Three? There are
so many things
– do I have to pick just one? Well it would have to be
the lasagna that we have before each rehearsal LOL –
No seriously - I think what I love most is singing with the other
voices. Judy and Helen are so talented and lots of fun so I get
to learn and laugh a lot. I also love the challenge of doing
things that are new to me and outside of my comfort zone – it
keeps me on my toes! (See the phobia section!)
What famous musician/group
would you say has most influenced your music?
Well the first main influence was John Denver – but later
it was Nanci Griffith, Dolly Parton and the Indigo Girls.
What is your favourite
instrument?
Cello – always wished I could play it. I lived with a cellist
for 3 years and never tired of listening to him play.
Why do you write songs?
It’s cheaper than therapy? Mmm that is an interesting
question..I guess I don’t really feel that I write songs
– they sort of write themselves – I really just only
write them down.
What is your favourite
pizza topping?
Pizza Express in London do a pizza with spinach and an egg on
the top – sounds gross but it is the BEST!
Where do you see yourself
in 10 years?
Never been much of a long term planner – but it would be
nice to be married – and of course playing music and designing
things – might even have another CD out by then! LOL
What is the most unusual
thing(s) you have done?
I think the most unusual thing I have done is hold a baby gorilla – I
was in Africa and met Julia the baby gorilla who was an orphan
- small but so heavy – and when you look into their
eyes it is like they are looking into your soul. I guess the
only other thing I can think of that could be considered unusual
was reppelling down the outside of a 12 storey building – (Don’t
ask!)
What(or who LOL) would
you do differently if you had the chance?
Mmmm never really been someone that has regrets but I guess – I
would have bought a house when I first came to the valley when
you could still by them for 50k!
What is your favourite
food?
There are so many …first has to be my friend Carol's sticky
toffee pudding (to die for and I don’t even have a sweet
tooth) but if I had to pick just one it would be asparagus.
What is your favourite
form of relaxation?
A good foreign movie DVD, a glass of wine and cuddles with my
dog Oliver ... or a trip to the hydropath.
do you have any phobias?
Yes, harmony singing! And spiders.
What's your favorite CD
lately?
KT Tunstall, “Through the Telescope” and the Indigo
Girls “For All That We Let In.
What's under your bed?
Dust bunnies and my art school portfolio – the other stuff
is none of your business…LOL
What's your dream vacation?
I have always wanted to go to Peru and do the Inka Trail but
it would probably kill me so I would settle for the Maldives
lying on a golden beach on my own island.
What is your favourite
quote?
Dolly Parton: "It takes a whole lot of money to make someone
look this cheap!"
Favourite television character?
Mulder from the X-Files (yes, x-files is my addiction). He was
such a bizarre character with such a weird and sick sense of
humour that I just adored him. I always wanted to be
Scully cause she got to hang out with him - but I could never
run in heels!
